A Society That Failed!

Since you are reading my first blog post, go easy on me. :D

I could have started with some light material but in the wake of recent circumstances (growing sexual assaults on women) I thought I had to write this. This might look like an essay but this is serious stuff and I have tried to do my best with my first post.
I am not going to dawdle into details about ascending sexual crimes against women. We all know the statistics. I'll come straight to the point. I was wondering if there was something that could be done in order to lower the crime rate. Putting a complete full stop at the current time would be asking too much I guess. Changes do not happen overnight. Though I would love to see that day when there is not even a single news about a women being molested, harassed, raped or eve-teased.
Anyway, I came up with a few ideas that I think could make a difference.

1) BANNING EXPLICIT VIDEOS: Before you start forming your own perceptions about the word- explicit, do read further. I am not saying ban the porn industry. That's not possible because of a hundred reasons. I do not watch porn and like many females I do not support it either. I am trying to be a little practical here. So, as I was saying rather writing we cannot establish a complete ban on the porn industry. But we can definitely put a ban on 'punish-sex videos'or violent porn. Yes, visuals do trigger violence especially in men with a mentality that's sicker than a toilet seat. There are too many examples to be mentioned here. Google them if you want. Just like there is no promotion of child porn, eliminating violent porn could be a little helpful.

2)REHABILITATION CENTRES: All of us have heard about 'Alcohol Anonymous' and 'Love Addicts Anonymous'. Introducing similar rehabs for people(or should I say animals) who commit such heinous crimes would probably help. My point is, not only would this provide an insight as to what these sick people really think and hence provide us with better solutions but also it could help set the retarded minds right. I am not saying the criminals deserve a chance, certainly not after raping a woman. Crime management will go a long way only if some govt/non-govt agencies would mark areas where such crimes were on a high and set up rehabs so as to treat men charged with eve-teasing and harassment. It is a proven fact that rehabs have helped treat alcohol and drug addicts and maybe this experiment could turn out to be successful in sexual crime management as well. 'Porn Anonymous' is just a name suggestion.

3) STRINGENT LAWS: Sentencing a rape accused to a mere number of years in jail is so not done! I think it is unfair! We need more stringent laws. There has to be a fear of the law. It is disheartening to see the number of people flouting laws. What's even more disheartening is that we do not implement stringent laws for the fear that it will escalate crime. C'mon, do these criminals need an excuse to outrage the modesty of a women? Lenient laws or strict laws, a sick mind will still pursue its' criminal ventures. I am in full support of chemical castration and corporal punishment. If evoking fear is what it takes to curb crimes against women, so be it!

4) LAYING OUT A VALUE SYSTEM: One can never get enough idea of how much importance values hold in our lives. Man is a social animal. Laying out a good value-based system will go eons in bringing down crime. Charity begins at home, so do values. It is necessary for parents to inculcate good values in their children. Instead of teaching your daughters to not wear a skirt, teach your sons to not rape! A family plays a crucial role in the character building of an individual. Holding workshops where parents are taught how to recognise and monitor symptoms of aggressive behaviour in kids would help in the formation of a better society. In short, teach your sons to respect women. (maybe then the idea of violent porn wouldn't be so appealing.)

5) COMPLULSORY SELF DEFENCE TRAINING: Martial arts! Yes! I happen to be a fan of karate! :D Every girl should have some basic training in self defence. How? Make self defence training compulsory at school level and if possible at university level as well. Include any form of martial arts in the school curriculum. For women who are working or are housewives set up self-defence training camps/workshops. Both the private sector and the public sector should make collaborative efforts in this direction. Trust me, it will surely help. Running one minute self-defence TV commercials would be good. I personally think being able to ward off a stalker by punching his nose (if need be, kicking him in the balls) and making him squeal in pain would be nice. ;)

I think I am done with the suggestions here. I now realise that writing a blog post can take more time than expected! :P Conclusively put, a society that cannot protect half of its' population (women) is a society that has failed!

I hope all the good readers reading this post get the point. ;)

  1. Great post about a very important and pressing issue. Thanks for bringing this up. I do agree that a lot of these terrible crimes against women could be prevented by teaching young boys to respect all females. :)

  2. A well compiled post! Great work girl! Keep it up!
I think a very big cause of such crimes is the conservative mentality of society. People think if a girl is wearing a revealing outfit, she wants to get raped!!

This whole mentality needs to be changed!

  4. Nice work for a first time blogger, Urvashi. :)
I agree with all your suggestions for a better society except the one where you said "banning explicit videos". Now now...before you jump to conclusions...lol...this is why. Banning the videos will not stop the perverts who watch them or seek them on the internet. Banning will just make them more creative in the ways they hunt for such videos on the net. I think your point about the value system comes into picture here. Values begin at home and the biggest gift a mother can give her son is to teach him how to value a woman, right from his toddler years. :)
Keep up the good work babe! <3

    1. Thanks Sri! :) I get your point here. But when I wrote that point I also had 'rehabs' in my mind. That's when rehabs come into play. Of course change will not happen overnight. It takes time. I am thankful for all the kind words that you put in! Your feedback always helps! Cheers! <3 :)

  7. Interesting read. Because you went to school in Delhi, I believe you may know more about this subject second hand, as there is such terrible crimes against women in India in general. I really hope you or friends of yours never experienced any such abuse, though from the statistics, I think chances are you most likely did know someone, if indirectly, who was affected as such.

I lived in China several years and even though we read about how modern it is becoming, the truth be told that much of China is still very rural minded; young women are still regarded as secondary, and are often sent off to the city to make money in what ever way possible to send back to the family, and more likely to help support a more appreciated younger or older brother.

I wish you continued success and good luck with your career in architecture.

    1. Hello Ma'am!
Please forgive me for this extremely late reply. (I have not been receiving notifications from my blog due to some technical issues.)
I am glad that you checked this and found it worth reading. :) Well, truth be told almost all the women here have faced some kind of abuse in one way or the other. (At least once in their life.) So, stats are bad. It's sad to see that women are still treated as secondary in many countries even today. We can only hope that a change will come and it will come soon. (It should.)
Thankyou for your time and wishes. I wish the very best for you too. <3 :)
